Jesus says, “I have not come to destroy the Law but to fulfill it,” and then he goes on to demand that His followers keep the spirit of Torah, not just its externals. The person, for example, who not only avoids breaking the commandment not to murder but even learns to love one’s enemy is keeping Torah according to a circumcision of the heart. Matthew 5:17-21 is the introduction, and 5:18 – 7:11 is explaining the principles of this “greater righteousness,” culminating in the Golden Rule of Matthew 7:12, “Whatever you want someone would do to you, do that to them, for this is the Law and the prophets.”

Comment on There‘s ‘but,’ and then there’s ‘BUT!’ — Greek adversative conjunctions by Steve C. Singleton https://deeperstudy.com/theres-but-and-then-theres-but-2/#comment-24128 Wed, 26 Jan 2022 01:54:44 +0000 http://deeperstudy.com/?p=3418#comment-24128 The “but” (de) is at the beginning of verse 10. The context is this: After quoting Isaiah 52:15, just before the Messianic prophecy in chapter 53 of the crucifixion of Christ and its substitutionary atonement, Paul says God revealed this (that is, the fact and purpose of the cross as fulfillment of God’s eternal purpose and plan) by His Spirit. No one could have ever imagined providing the way of salvation through such a horrible instrument of tortuous death, but that is what God did. We would never think up such a plan nor imagine God would accomplish such an outlandish means to save. Nevertheless, God did it that way, and He revealed His plan to us after it happened.

Comment on There‘s ‘but,’ and then there’s ‘BUT!’ — Greek adversative conjunctions by Gary Crist https://deeperstudy.com/theres-but-and-then-theres-but-2/#comment-23637 Fri, 12 Nov 2021 09:51:40 +0000 http://deeperstudy.com/?p=3418#comment-23637 In 1 Cor 2:9 there is a “but” after telling us that “Eye hath not seen or ear heard nor has it even entered into the heart of man what God has prepared for us” Then it goes on to explain what He has reveled to us. Which type of “but-BUT” is this that is between the Eye hath not seen part and the “but” “BUT” when He goes on to say that we have seen these things.
Some would say that He has already reveled all these riches to us and others would say not so. My thinking is that, To me I would almost think the “but” should be an “and” and that there are still things that has not entered into our heart that God has prepared for us.
Thank you for your cartoon example of the word “but” “BUT” very enlightening.
Thanks,
Gary

Can you help me find those passages as they relate the Torah?

Comment on Predictive prophecy: seven possible outcomes by jim jardine https://deeperstudy.com/predictive-prophecy-seven-possible-outcomes/#comment-6814 Thu, 22 Nov 2018 14:23:19 +0000 http://deeperstudy.com/?p=2809#comment-6814 One of the great mysteries of studying the Scriptures is the statement of Paul that spiritual men interpret spiritually and not carnally. I have come to see the struggle the majority of believers have when it comes to understanding the Scriptures, and that is they approach with a spiritual carnality. That is to say they use their natural mind, education and understanding to comprehend. Unfortunately, that is not Paul’s insight. So what is the difference? Paul tells us in a quote from the OT: who can instruct God? He then follows with the mega insight that has generally not been understood since the first century: But I have the mind of Christ. My dear friend, if through the revelation of the Holy Spirit you can grasp this intention then you will be on the correct path. I would love to know that you are a spiritual interpreter and not a spiritually carnal interpreter. Since I do not know you I shall judge by your response. Am I allowed to do that? Your response will tell me everything I need to know. Jim
