Right, people may use it if they really want, although it has difficult clauses. Like other version 1.0 CC licenses, it includes a warranty (good for the reusers, potentially dangerous for the licensor) and it does not allow the upgrade of derivatives to other licenses. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:44, 13 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Chiti Abraira: Hola y bienvenido.
Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png image as a new user. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to license it on your official website or social media or send permission via VRT. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 20:04, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
:I don't quite understand what you're saying.
Indeed, I'm trying to upload a photo to es:User:Chiti Abraira/Taller/Javier Bermejo, but I've never done it before and I'm trying to learn. I have one provided by the photographer and his verbal permission to publish it. I know I have to obtain a license, but I still don't know how to do it right now. I'm asking for help with this.
Verbal permission is not enough. We need written permission sent by the photographer via VRT/es to permissions-eswikimedia.org with a carbon copy to you to keep you in the loop. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 19:43, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
There are many pictures of Stolpersteine already here in Commons, e. g.: Category:Stolpersteine in Stuttgart-Mitte. I took pictures of three more such stones. But I am hesitating to upload them because when I use the upload wizard, I am asked "Is this entirely your own work?". I think the correct answer is "This work contains the work of others", because the stones were made by Gunter Demnig.
Since I don't know, whether Mr. Demnig has a copyright protection, the wizard says: Do not upload.
But there are alreay so many pictures of Stolpersteine here.
What is the correct approach? Tdiet (talk) 21:36, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If the stones are in Germany COM:FOP Germany indicates that if they are in public and permanent then they can be used. {{FoP-Germany}} should be placed on the file page. Also US copyright needs to be considered, but that is beyond my abilities.
The Upload Wizard option "Yes, this work is not protected by copright law" could be used and you can add "{{FoP-Germany}}" at the next step in the "Any other information you want to add" while mentioning it is Demnig's work.
Photos in other countries may need a different evaluation.
Perhaps every file in the category should get tagged if they feature an artwork.
Agree. The Stolpersteine are usually paving stone-formed and have simple text (usually name, where they were deported, date of birth, date of death if murdered, etc.). --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 16:31, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I was hoping to upload the flags of the local government areas of the Gambia, as none of their flags are currently present on Wikipedia other than Banjul. Flags of the World has made a list of these flags based on photographs from government socials. I was planning to digitize these designs and upload them to Commons.
Are these flags considered to be in the public domain? I'm not sure if they're actually official or if they're just used de facto. What are the laws like regarding flags in the Gambia, or are there any? Do I need to obtain a license, or would this be considered free use? Omnigrade (talk) 08:02, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I assume @Holendarek is referring to File:Dariusz Bojda (2025).jpg. The image was marked by the bot for deletion because the image was uploaded without a license. I can see that you have started the COM:VRT process, but you still have to put the image under a license to avoid it being deleted in a week’s time. See COM:L for examples of allowed licenses. Hello! Is it permissible to upload a historic photo downloaded from a university webpage? I'm specifically interested in uploading a photo of Robert Gonzales (from the page linked below), the founding editor of The Daily Gamecock, to include on The Daily Gamecock Wiki page.
Thank you both for your help with this! So in a case like this where the copyright does still apply, would I be able to upload the photo if I secured written permission from the university?
Also, do all of the same rules apply for screenshots? For instance, if I were to screenshot and crop his photo from the '08 yearbook (linked below), would I just need permission (in this case from University of South Carolina Archives)?
@Matthewsixone: You would need a free license (not just permission to use on Commons or Wikipedia; Commons doesn't accept unfree content), and you'd need that from the holder of the copyright (which quite likely is not the university). If the copyright-holder wants to grant a free license (I recommend {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}} as the most "conservative" that we consider free), they need to send email to that effect as explained at COM:VRT. - Jmabel ! talk04:17, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Matthewsixone: The university claims a copyright and all rights reserved on the 1908 publication, so you decide if you think you might get in trouble with the university, but as far as the policy of Commons is concerned, Commons does not require any permission to upload a copy of a photo published in 1908 in a publication that did not have a copyright notice. If you upload that photo, you could use for status template something like {{PD-Art|PD-US-expired}}. Technically, it could be "PD-US-no notice", but the wording of the templates seem to orient to the template "expired". -- Asclepias (talk) 14:26, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There is a table on the Women's Basketball NCAA tournament page with a mistake. Is there a way to edit the table? When I click edit I can edit the text, but I don't see a way to access the table to make the correction. CoFo12 (talk) 21:16, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello and welcome @CoFo12. This is the help desk for Wikimedia Commons, the online repository for images that works with other projects like Wikipedia. I’m assuming you are referring to the article page at English Wikipedia, but I’m not sure what problems you have for the table exactly. Maybe try checking the guide for tables here: Help:Table. If you have any more questions, feel free to reply here or ask for help at Wikipedia:Help desk. Tvpuppy (talk) 21:30, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps you are editing the article in mobile? In that case, there is a button in the top left corner of the table that you can click, then you can select the option “Select contents”, then you can edit the contents of the table. Tvpuppy (talk) 21:36, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I wanted to upload some files (that is the two pilot's of Azumanga Daioh that I downloaded onto my USB Stick) but they aren't my work but yet I still saw entire episodes uploaded onto YouTube and they seemed to not be taken down by the original authors.
Hello and welcome @GuesanLoyalist. If they are not your work, you cannot upload them to Commons without permission of the copyright holders. The fact that copyright violations on YouTube weren’t taken down does not mean it’s a free pass to also commit the same copyright violations. See Commons:Copyright rules for a detailed explanation of what content is allowed on Commons. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 03:44, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you too for asking your question here. It’s always a good practice to ask before upload if you have doubts on the copyright status of images. Tvpuppy (talk) 04:04, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
How do try, except, finally, and raise work in Python?
In Python, exception handling is managed using try, except, finally, and raise.
try: This block contains the code that may cause an exception. If an error occurs, Python stops executing the code inside try and looks for an appropriate except block.
except: This block catches and handles specific exceptions that occur in the try block. You can have multiple except blocks to handle different types of errors separately.
finally: This block always executes, regardless of whether an exception occurred or not. It is commonly used for cleanup operations like closing files or releasing resources.
raise: This keyword is used to manually trigger an exception. It allows you to generate errors deliberately in specific conditions. Prabhatgamerzz (talk) 05:39, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have a black and white photograph that is part B&W and a very small part in color. No changes have been made to the photographic content, except that a large part of it was changed from color to B&W. Is this kind of picture acceptable in the Wiki Loves Folklore photographic contest? Teacher Richard (talk) 06:43, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@AjarnRichard, I didn't see any general notes about digital manipulation (eg colour/b&w) in the rules or judging criteria listed at Commons:Wiki Loves Folklore 2025/Rules. I think it is up to the judges to evaluate each photo.
Be sure to note any manipulation in the file's description and you might consider uploading the colour version too if that will be useful for any Wikimedia projects.
Somethings go wrong with this subject, because there are two artists with this namen one born 1735 en the other born in 1852. Recently someone changed the name of some of the categories concerning these to painters.
See here. All the media files ended up in the main categorie: Domenico De Angelis. Containing works from both artist.
To add more to the confusion is that there is also this already existing Category:Domenico De Angelis (19th-century painter).
The recently chosen name for the category for the artist born in 1852 is: Category:Domenico De Angelis (Italo-Brazilian painter). I have some doubts if this is correct because i believe that the artist is born in Italy and did also work in Brasil but i can't find a source that made clear he permanently lived there or gained the Brasilian nationality.
I don't feel confidant about my skills here in commons to try to clean-up this category structure so i hope someone can help me with this.
Hi, I just took the definition from Wikidata, if this is incorrect you shoudl fix Wikidata first. Secondly, in Category:Domenico De Angelis we can just put a note for the other category. I think (19th-century painter) and (Italo-Brazilian painter) are just the same person, we should merge them. --Sailko (talk) 18:42, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Sailko: Wikidata has distinct Domenico De Angelis (Q18663487) and Domenico De Angelis (Q15943290); I agree with you on the latter conflation, and that person is certainly Q15943290; [4] at least vouches for Brazilian nationality, but could be wrong; is there anything more you would need to fix this?
Additional remark: [5] (Getty) gives both Italian and Brazilian nationality but says Italian is "preferred." I'd say that even at best, that is enough of a quagmire that it shouldn't be part of a category name. - Jmabel ! talk23:13, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Tagging @Sailko Thank you for your responses. I don't know how to fix assigning the correct category to media files after changes its name. Like i mentioned. This file now has the wrong painter assigned, and there are more examples. They were originally assigned to category:Domenico De Angelis (artist).
Second problem is that there are now two categories for Domenico De Angelis from 1852-1904. (19th-century painter) and (Italo-Brazilian painter). I think that should be just one. The correct name i do not have a specific preference and i do not no what the standard is here on commons. Personally i would go on the safe side and just use year of birth and year of death for both painters. --Geerestein3 (talk) 10:53, 22 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Geerestein3: Since it sounds like you are out of your depth, I'll set up the categories and Wikidata. However, since you know the subject matter, could you please make sure in the end that everything ends up in the appropriate categories? Thanks. - Jmabel ! talk23:22, 22 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We haven't heard from Jarekt or Sailko, but this doesn't seem likely to be very controversial, and I'm just going to go ahead and do it. - Jmabel ! talk19:09, 23 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Jmabel I do not fully agree, as he died in 1804, which is already 19th century! It may make some confusion. Neoclassical was more clear to me, as his are is definitely Neoclassical --Sailko (talk) 15:24, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I can tell, every piece we have from him is 18th-century, though it is possible that there is later work we do not have, or that something undated that we have could be later. - Jmabel ! talk02:24, 25 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

How do you do, fellow Wikipedians! (is it correct to call you guys Wikipedians?).
I wanted to Recreate the FE!N (By Travis Scott) Album cover in Roblox Studio But i am afraid that Roblox (Or Travis Scott, UMG, anyone involved tbh) would take legal action or copyright strike the article.
So, is it allowed to Remake the FE!N Album cover in Roblox Studio without any Negative Copyright Consequences?
See COM:DW. I'm not sure exactly what you're proposing, but I will note 2 things: 1) Commons doesn't accept copyrighted works unless explicitly free licensed by their original authors/copyright holders. 2) If someone thinks they've found a sneaky way to get around copyright, it probably is not ok either. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 19:09, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have a question regarding the "Creative Commons Attribution licence (reuse allowed)" tag on the videos from the YouTube account Our Movie Guide[6] How is it that they can have "Creative Commons Attribution licence (reuse allowed)" but then in their captions they state "All rights, title and interest to the Materials, including the copyrights and trademarks therein, shall at all times be and remain with the studio and any other co-owner(s) of such copyrights and trademarks in the Materials". I'm just trying to understand the logic behind this, as all this copyright stuff is still relatively new to me. Maxwell Smart12332109:31, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Maxwell Smart123321 this definitely not a full answer (others will chime in I imagine), but...
My understanding is that copyright is held by the creator; they control copying, distribution etc. And the creator can choose to licence their work any way they like.
I think an example would be Microsoft Windows. Microsoft holds the copyright, but chooses to licence use of the software - typically for money and under strict conditions.
When you follow the link on Youtube "Creative Commons Attribution licence (reuse allowed)" it takes you to this page with some details.
If your question was leading to "can I upload Our Movie Guide videos from Youtube to Commons" it can get interesting as we need to be sure that Our Movie Guide holds the copyright to be able to licence it. Recently many Vogue Taiwan CC licenced Youtube videos were deleted as they didn't hold the copyright (discussion). If Our Movie Guide videos include clips of movies, posters, or other copyrighted works belonging to others we can't accept them. Commons:YouTube files has some uploading tips.
Incidentally, for those following, here is an example Youtube video from Our Movie Guide with this situation. You can only see the licence link in desktop, it is in the description. Commander Keane (talk) 11:06, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Maxwell Smart123321: Given that OMG does not hold any copyright on the materials they distribute on their channel, and they acknowledge that they don't, a free license would make sense only if the actual copyright owners, likely the movie studios or someone else, has issued that same free license in the first place. OMG redistributes material distributed by EPK.TV, who itself distributes press kits for studios. I don't know how accurate or mistaken the license tags at OMG might be. IMHO, a license tag at OMG should not be taken as a fact unless there is evidence that the material was published with the free license by the copyright owner. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:25, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I have in my archives a signature from John Buchanan (Canadian politician), 20th Premier of Nova Scotia. I thought it would be cool to scan and upload this to the commons so that I can then put it on the corresponding Wikipedia page, but I'm not sure exactly how the copyright around this would work. Buchanan died in 2019, but are signatures in Canada even subject to copyright to begin with? If it's okay to post, would I upload it as "own work" because I created the scan, or would I attribute it to John Buchanan given that it's his signature? Thank you, MediaKyle (talk) 22:48, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Virtually no signature can be copyrighted in Canada; unless it is something way out of the ordinary, it is in the public domain, {{PD-signature}}
A scan does not create any new rights, Buchanan remains the author of his own signature.
I want to upload a photography of an actual scientist, but it's not my work, and apparently it has no licence, so I was wondering if I could upload that picture.

Two images of "Problem (Symposion)" by Akseli Gallén-Kallela
These two images are of the exact same painting by Akseli Gallén-Kallela and even their contents are pretty much identical. The latter is at a much better resolution than the former.
Do we need the first images at all, seeing that both images are in Commons and thus usable in all Wikimedia projects? If we don't, should all pages that use the first image be changed to use the second one and the first image then be deleted? JIP (talk) 00:13, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@JIP: I'm guessing that all visual differences are just artifacts in the first one, so I'd say the answer is yes; if you are going to take this on, do be careful to merge all information before making the first one a redirect, because there appears to be some information on the first file page that is missing from the second. - Jmabel ! talk00:56, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo.
Hallo. Danke für diese Erklärung. Können wir das schrittweise nochmal durchgehen?
1) Foto hochladen. Das habe ich ganz sicher hinbekommen. Es ist definitiv da.
2) Einbinden. Du hast das eben gemacht? Wo und wie? Das war meine Frage! Kannst du das bitte detailierter beschreiben?
Dazu findet man nämlich keine Anleitung, kein Tutorial, keine Info...
Viktor ip (talk) 06:29, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
thanks for pinging, @Viktor ip: if you could ping me, this will call my attention.

The President of El Salvador posted a video of deportations[7]. Would a screenshot of it count as "fair use" for historical value?
The Presidential Press Office has also released some photos. I think I can only access them 2nd hand like from this AP article.[8] Would that count as either free use or fair use?
Fair use is not allowed on Wikimedia Commons, see COM:L. Non-free images and videos may be uploaded locally to English Wikipedia if it follows the guidelines, the photos from El Salvador's government are not free use since they don't automatically put government works in the public domain and if there isn't an explicit free license, then the works are presumed to be non-free. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:01, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I have been granted permission by the band whose page I am updating to upload their single/ album sleeves. I have the written consent. Do I need to send it somewhere?… any help appreciated. Don’t want to get in trouble with anyone! Thanks Holeinthelegparttwo (talk) 17:16, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@TruthBendicoot: if I understand correctly from https://berlin.museum-digital.de/object/140197, the photo is by Ludwig Levy-Lenz (though possibly just published by him, with the photographer unknown; Levy-Lenz was a doctor at the institute). If the photo is by Levy-Lenz, who died in 1966, it would be copyrighted in Germany through 2036, so we can't use it. If we can't sort out who photographed it or just when it is taken, that's worse, because we'd have to allow 120 years from the latest possible date (1933 + 120 = 2053, so it could be used in 2054). In both cases, it would presumably be PD in the U.S. before it would in Germany (95 years after publication) so once it it is PD in Germany we could use it.
It's quite possible that authorship and publication info could be tracked down. If it was published before 1930 it would already be OK in the U.S.; if the author died in 1954 or earlier (and, sadly, quite a few of the people involved with the Institute were killed in the camps), it would be PD in Germany. Both of those dates move year by year. - Jmabel ! talk00:37, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If the image is unused (not used on any wikis), am I allowed to place it on any Wikipedia page if I searched it up here, or do I have to obtain permission from the author? Justjourney (talk) 03:06, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Justjourney: From Commons point of view, there is no problem with any file on Commons being used in any language Wikipedia. Of course, that is no guarantee that the active editors on Wikipedia will want a particular image on a particular page. - Jmabel ! talk03:59, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Again, I see no relevance to Wikimedia Commons (this site). Is there something on Commons that you need help with? Otherwise, you are asking on the wrong page. - Jmabel ! talk05:21, 29 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Is there any quick way to delete all of the pornographic images uploaded by User:Degenbenis11? They were used in vandalism on the English Wikipedia and I think they are being used to against the wishes of the photo's subject, to embarrass them. I see no positive use for these files on the Commons but I don't know how to nominate multiple images. Thanks for any help you can provide. Liz (talk) 00:41, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I uploaded a photo of Dr. Haileyesus Getahun and photo is not visible on his bio. It was visible but when I checked now it is not avaialable. What can i do to get this photo up on the profile?
At one point I saw where I was able to add a tag either on your site or on my computer. Now, I don’t see tagging. Must it be a tag or can it “Wiki loves folklore 2025” also be a caption? Thank you! Globugs (talk) 11:44, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
